Windows Phone 7.8
Guess what? I’m not upset!
The Windows Phone 7 platform is going to be 2 this year, and frankly, Microsoft HAD to make some changes. Changes that would drastically alter the core architecture of the platform. This is exactly what they did! While some see it as ‘unfortunate’ that current generation devices won’t be getting the full-fledged Windows Phone 8 moniker because there is absolutely no way the hardware could support it.
I can’t speak for HTC or Samsung here, but I can already see Nokia pushing their current Windows 7 devices to their limits! Windows Phone 7.8 doesn’t necessarily mean ‘end of the line’ for the current Lumias. There’s still a possibility of seeing a 7.9 folks. These current gen devices could be well supported and maintained for 2 more years, or I could be completely wrong and 7.8 will be all she wrote.
As a tech geek – I GET IT! As a consumer, I can see why people may feel ‘betrayed’.
To them I say: It really IS okay! MS and Nokia will continue supporting the 7.x platform! Do I regret changing out my Titan for the Lumia 900? Not a BIT!!! I feel like I’m on the vendor who’s going to be better at supporting their current gen hardware even after Windows Phone 8 hits. I KNEW going in to the Lumia that a full Windows Phone 8 upgrade was ‘uncertain’, but I still feel like I made the right choice. Granted, being the geek I am, I will most likely end up with a WP8 device when they launch because, well, I can’t help myself! (Sorry honey, you know it’s true. Be warned now!)
I’m VERY excited for the unified Windows 8 platforms! Microsoft is making the first move to truly create the ‘single pane of glass’ they’ve been talking about for a year! It’s going to be a huge move for them and they continue to have my support!
