Average Joe
Sometimes we in the WinPhone community need to take a step back and remember that the Average Joe is just that….average. For the most part, people don’t really care about the upcoming specs or the soon to be newer models or features. Wireless is a NOW business. In this world of instant gratification people are interested in today. And when they walk into a cellular store, 9 out of 10 are walking out with something today. My experience is that only 10% of customers are what I like to call “geeks”. The other 90% want what’s happening now.
Even with news of the iPhone 5 around the corner, our shelves are packed with IPhone 4S and they don’t stay packed for too long. The new IOS 6 news hasn’t slowed down sales of 4S one bit, or the IPhone 4. Even 3GS’s still sell because of their .99 price point.
WIth all the talk and press about the Galaxy S III, the Galaxy S II SkyRocket still sells.
The majority of the population doesn’t care or has resolved itself to the fact that technology changes rapidly and that the device they get today will be old in 6 months anyway. No one went crazy when customers learned that Siri would not be availablep for the IPhone 4. The vast majority accepted it and still had a hell of a phone to use.
That’s why we shouldn’t get to alarmed or upset that the current Windows Phone 7.8 devices will not be able to get all the features of WP 8.
WP 7.8 is an amazing device on its own merit and should be sold with confidence. Late October, early November is still a long way away and the customer can get the best phone currently out on the market, the Windows Phone 7.8 devices, and have an incredible experience.
The people who bought Lumia 900′s from me today were so delighted after I demonstrated all it could do,that the issue of upward scalability never became an issue.
Finances also play a huge part in this scenario as customers don’t always have $200 to lay out for a new device and prices like $99, $49 and even .99 are just more practical.
“You know that 3GS is almost 3 year old technology, right? That’s OK, I don’t need all those bells and whistles I just want to have a Smartphone.”
I see your looking at the Galaxy SII Skyrocket. You know the SIII will be out next week?
Oh really, will it be $99 like this one? Money talks the majority of the time for the Average Joe.

With the $99 price point for the Lumia 900, with $50 of free accesories or the $49 price of the new Samsung Focus 2, or the 16 mpixel camera of the Titan II, customers can get a great value and/or an amazing device that is top of the heap NOW! Just like the Average Joe wants.
